Mayor Dennis Donohue Welcomes Chef Lidia Bastianich to Salinas Valley
Four generations of family, including Bastianich’s mother, have assisted Lidia in her restaurants, cookbooks, and television programs to date.  lidiaBastianich’s appreciation for family business and Italian tradition intersected perfectly with the Salinas Valley, where Italian immigrants on family farms had learned to grow artichokes, garlic, grapes, chicories, and so much more. Salinas shares a similar coastal climate and soil composition with many Italian growing regions, so Italian vegetable varieties naturally grow well throughout Monterey County.

Mayor Donohue is the President of Royal Rose LLC, a grower-shipper of European specialty produce: i.e. Radicchio, Treviso, and Frisee. Bastianich was interested in visiting Royal Rose to meet with the Italian owners and discuss how their personal backgrounds in Italian agriculture lead them to the Salinas Valley over two decades ago. Bastianich was interested in the family business dynamic of Royal Rose, and the preservation of Italian culture internationally.  Of course, as a chef, she was especially interested in the produce she easily acquires in the New York terminal market. After a brief visit to Royal Rose’s Radicchio Café (the test kitchen portion of their Salinas office), Bastianich, her daughter Tanya, and her film crew, toured a mature radicchio field ready for harvest in South Salinas. During her visit to the Central Coast, Bastianich was also interested in viewing local garlic farms, Andy Boy’s broccoli rabe fields, and Pezzini Farm’s artichoke varieties currently flourishing in the Salinas Valley.
