Radicchio & Salinas The Perfect Combination
The combined efforts of Salinas Valley innovation and Old World Italian radicchio-growing experience led to the creation of European Vegetable Specialties in 1993.
An Italian Team
Italian farmers Lucio Gomiero and Carlo Boscolo teamed up with Salinas Valley growers John Tamagni and A.W. Johnson & Son in the late 1980's. Gomiero, a winemaker by trade, had the idea of bringing Boscolo's proprietary seed varieties and 50 years of radicchio growing in Italy to the U.S. He believed there was a new market for the flavorful, versatile vegetable.
Timing is Everything
Their timing couldn't have been better. The packaged salad revolution was just beginning. EVS' year-round availability helped allow European blend style salads enjoy significant growth and helped propel EVS to become the largest single producer of radicchio in the world.
Radicchio's Popularity Grows
Royal Rose radicchio is now a common ingredient in many gourmet fresh-cut salad offerings. Radicchio continues to gain awareness in the foodservice industry as well. Chefs continue to appreciate radicchio's versatility as both a salad or cooking ingredient.
